Precautions to Take When Cleaning Windows

May 18th, 2009

“We don’t do windows.” How many times have you heard that phrase before? Well if you have a cleaning company, then you probably don’t want to say that to your customers, because you’d be turning away a profitable add-on service…and who doesn’t want more sales and profits?

If you decide to offer window washing to your residential or commercial customers, then you need to know the proper procedures for cleaning windows, as well as the precautions you need to take so that you don’t damage the windows you’re cleaning. Nothing stings worse than the knowledge that you just ruined a window and now have to spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars to replace it!

So what precautions should you take?

*Never use abrasive cleaners on windows or window frames, as they can scratch the glass.

*When using a razor blade to scrape off construction residue or particles like bird poop, be sure that the window is wet. NEVER use a razor blade on a dry surface.

*The same goes for using #0000 steel wool. NEVER use steel wool on a dry surface. Always wet the window first, and be sure to only use #0000 steel wool. Anything else will scratch.

*Use caution when using acid cleaners. They should only be used in extreme circumstances like removing hard water spots. Follow manufacturers instructions to the letter and use gloves and goggles to
protect your hands and eyes. If using an acid cleaner, be sure to protect the frame and wall below the window. Keep the acid from running over by placing an absorbent towel or drop cloth onto the window sill
and floor.

*If using ammonia, use the same cautions as you do when using acid cleaners. Also be aware that ammonia can discolor the window putty with repeated use.

*If using ladders to wash windows, use proper ladder safety procedures.

Construction for the New Age

October 22nd, 2008

When you think of construction today, you have to note that it has come a long way. Older buildings were not made to stand up to the weather and the harsh conditions that could be made. However, now we are learning more about steel and how we can build buildings that can actually sway in the wind to avoid being broken by damaging high winds. A lot of buildings that people make today are actually even earthquake proof. These are buildings that you are going to find in other areas of the world that have a lot of earthquakes.

More Construction Companies Close Down

October 22nd, 2008

There are a few less jobs out there this week, as more big time construction companies close their doors. Although they say that the close is not permanent, they are stopping all building until the market gets up and moving again. The owners say that they would go under if they kept everyone employed waiting for the market to start back up. By letting people go on leave and closing down the shops, they are able to stay afloat a lot longer while they wait to see what happens with the market place. They did tell all of the workers that they had a job there when and if the company opened back up.

A Hold on House Construction

October 21st, 2008

Although a lot of people thought that the real estate market was close to getting back on its feet, we are starting to see now that it could be a little bit further off. Thus, a lot of construction companies are holding off on building anymore houses for the time being. They say that there are a few companies out there that are still building, but with so few job opportunities (or so few people buying houses), there is no point to build a lot of extra houses. These other companies have opened their doors to building local shops and other buildings until the housing market gets back on its feet.
